Dataset
This dataset shows all city-managed trees, the majority of which are located on public property, lining streets, or in right of ways. The original inventory of these trees was conducted in the late 1990s/early 2000s by the Norfolk Master Gardeners. No official re-inventory has been conducted since then by City officials or ISA Certified Arborists, however, tree records in this dataset have been and are being updated over time by City Staff. This dataset will be updated in the Open Data Portal every weekday.

The International Coastal Cleanup is an international initiative that takes place annually September 1 through October 31. The event is designed to remove trash from beaches and waterways around the world. This cleanup is fueled by volunteer organizations and individuals with the goal of changing behavior toward cleaner, healthier waterways. Each piece of debris collected from the cleanup site is identified and tracked to provide a cumulative understanding of the debris that may find its way to our beaches and waterways. This dataset is updated annually.

The Community Appearance Index, also known as the Litter Index, is a tool designed by Keep America Beautiful to visually evaluate the overall appearance of a community using litter as an indicator. Every year, 60 routes throughout the five wards of Norfolk are analyzed to determine the cleanliness of the city. After a thorough training, a team of volunteers conduct the analysis using a scoring system ranging from 1-4 with “1” indicating minimal to no litter and “4” indicating extremely littered. Methodology for this process includes recruiting volunteers who commit to attend a one-and-a-half-day Community Appearance Index scan. Each volunteer is thoroughly trained on the index to accurately and consistently survey a statistical sample of the city. The results of the scan are then averaged to produce the City of Norfolk Community Appearance Index score.
This dataset is updated annually; the data begins in 2010. The Litter Index survey is normally conducted in August; the 2020 survey will be delayed due to COVID-19.

In 2022, Keep Norfolk Beautiful received a grant from Litterati to participate in the City Fingerprint Project. Litterati is a global litter data science company that records, analyzes, and provides insights into litter hotspots worldwide. Through the City Fingerprint Project, Litterati focused on observing and recording litter data in specific and repeatable locations in Norfolk through the Spring, Summer, and Fall of 2022 in order to provide a baseline of where litter is in Norfolk and what type is litter appears in the City. This dataset contains the litter that was observed during this project.
This dataset is a one-time data release and will not be updated.

This dataset contains the energy consumption for every building that is owned and occupied by the City of Norfolk. The dataset tracks electricity, natural gas, and water consumption by meter; most energy meters are tied to one building. The energy consumption data is collected in EnergyCAP, a system of record that tracks Norfolk’s energy management and utility bill accounting. This data originates from monthly utility bills submitted by Norfolk’s energy vendors. In this dataset, users can explore the amount of electricity, natural gas and propane consumed monthly by municipal buildings in Norfolk as well as follow energy expenditure trends. The data is updated weekly.

The City of Norfolk’s street sweeping program is designed to remove pollutants such as oil, grease, nutrients, and sediment from the roadway before entering the stormwater system. It supports Norfolk’s initiative for cleaner waterways by reducing pollution and nuisance flooding, minimizing stormwater runoff, and collecting approximately 6,682 tons of debris per year.
While the goal of the program is to ensure street sweeping occurs once per month for all neighborhoods, the program is currently experiencing delays due to long lead times on equipment repairs, hiring challenges, and inclement weather. The street sweeping schedule will be temporarily revised to a quarterly rotation until equipment challenges can be addressed. Areas with enforcement signage will continue to be swept monthly, and parking enforcement will not be suspended during this time.
This dataset reflects the recent changes in the street sweeping schedule, and shows a listing of the dates that curb in front of Norfolk addresses will be swept. The dataset will be updated at the beginning of each calendar year or as the street sweeping schedule changes.

This data is from five tide stations located in waterways throughout Norfolk: Elizabeth River Eastern Branch at Grandy Village, Little Creek at 20th Bay Street, Lafayette River at Mayflower Road, Mason Creek at Granby Street, and Elizabeth River Main Branch at Nauticus. This data will allow users to track and analyze tide levels in the City of Norfolk. The data is updated daily and encompasses a timeframe of September 30, 2020 to present.
Note: At the Mason Creek tide gauge, the water flows through a weir system (small dam) that alters the flow characteristics of the water; data from this tide station will differ from the other four tide stations.
Disclaimer: The City is making this data available with the understanding that it has not been reviewed or verified by an expert. Although the City makes every effort to ensure the tide gauges are accurate, we cannot guarantee the calibration or proper functioning of the gauges and accurate recording of measured tide levels at all times. In no event will the City of Norfolk be liable for any damages, including but not limited to loss or damage to property, lost profits, business interruption, loss of business information or other pecuniary loss that might arise from the use of this data. Any use of this data is for general information only and shall not be used for any improper purpose.

This dashboard brings together underground storage tank records from older paper sources as well as more recent inspection records. It allows for searches by address to retrieve all known records, as well as the ability to see a whole street. Please read the following caveats:
- Records have been aligned with current addresses, with some attempts made at fixing spelling errors, disambiguation, road re-naming, etc. However, about 25% of all records are not aligned to a current address and may contain relevant information to tanks still in the ground.
- There is no guarantee that all records are included or that they form a complete inventory of all tanks as some may have been damaged or lost. The absence of records should not be interpreted as the absence of a tank.
